More than the fear and the honor, I was excited for the opportunity that Janna' creative mind was giving me to reach out to children and give them an idea about how their vegetables were grown. And so Janna and her photographer husband Kyo came out the farm on multiple occasions, taking pictures and asking questions. It was fun to talk about what we do and lovely to see the slices of our farm life that Kyo captured through his lens.
And now, the project is almost complete! Janna sent me a rough draft to look over and I am smitten! She has crafted a clear and beautiful picture of what farming can look like in this day. I am so grateful to be a part of this book. Not only is she going to change the pictures children see in their minds eye when they imagine a farm, she has already changed the way I see my own farm, a real, and unexpected gift.
Janna and Kyo will be setting up a photo exhibition, with large prints from the project, at the Metuchen farmers' market from 9 am to 2 pm on July 16th. They will also be doing a reading at 11 am. Make sure to come check it out. For more information about the project, visit their website. If you don't like clicking links, you can copy past the address: http://kyomorishima.com/farmer-helen/
On the farm this week we have been working through the heat. We are busy planting fall crops including carrots, beets, leeks, and scallions. We are also pulling our garlic out of the field and tucking it into the coldframe to cure. Some of the heads are as big as my fist! I guess the ladybugs aren't the only ones that benefited from the mild winter!
One last thing, we recently have also had the pleasure of hosting a whole flock of red-wing blackbirds! The males with their unique red-orange markings on their shoulders are a dead give away. The females have more reserved brown coloring and blend in a little better. All of them are feasting on the seeds maturing in the field. Some weed seeds, and some volunteer oat and rye that came in with our straw. It is one of the wild things on our wild farm that has been making me smile this week.
That is all for now. Looking forward to seeing you at market this weekend!
