You may have noticed the complete lack of head lettuce? That is just one symptom of a big problem that we are having this year: Deer. They are ransacking the place like never before. Lots of hard headed young ones that are resisting the psychological training of our electric fence. Unfortunately, they have also taken to eating our tomato plants, along with the green tomatoes. We have a few plans cooking for how to deal with it but it will mean that our tomatoes will be a little later than planned, to our chagrin.
What is looking good? Second round of squash and cucumbers. Flowers. Wintersquash planting looks like it will be making some excellent specimens for the fall. And potatoes. Oh potatoes, we are so happy to be welcoming them back.
In case you missed it, we were on the cover of last weeks Inside Jersey, Star Ledger's magazine. The article inside is all about the farm origins. I was very flattered by it but also felt it downplayed Jim's critical role. After all, he has been working full time at Whistling Wolf for about half of its existence! Hard to believe indeed.
Wish us luck out there. We hope to bring you all the things you want in time.
Helen, Jim, and Exie the Dog
