The threat of the first frost is very real, but all our plantings have been hooped and bundled up in row cover to give them a buffer from the coming cold. Most importantly, our new direct seeded planting (internally known as “DSW” (Direct Seeded Winter)) has survived the cold and is beginning to produce arugula and radishes! With some luck, DSW will also produce some turnips and additional salad mix.
With our final plantings in the ground and covered up, it feels like we can finally focus on just maintaining our existing plantings… and tilling, cover cropping, cleaning up the field, sterilizing ground cover, digging the remaining potatoes and harvesting like our lives depend on it. Okay, so there is more to do than just tend the existing crops, but all the same it feels like a relief to not have to plant anything else out.
New this week: Arugula, Radishes, Garlic Braids and maybe some Broccoli!
